My 2017 Europe Itinerary: Inspired By Game Of Thrones Destinations

This summer, ‘Winter is coming’. Yes, you guessed it right! We are planning a Euro trip in May 2017 and it is inspired by ‘Game of Thrones’ destinations.

Europe has always been our favourite travel destination. We went to Greece for our honeymoon and Paris- Switzerland for our 1st marriage anniversary. Now that we have already started short listing locations for our 2ndmarriage anniversary, we wanted to do something different.

Having read all the 5 books of ‘A Songs of Ice and Fire’ series and watched the TV series umpteen number of times, we are die-hard GOT fan. This time we are going to travel to some of the most beautiful Game of Thrones destinations.

We have shortlisted 4 countries – Northern Ireland, Croatia, Spain and Morocco. We skipped Scotland and Iceland due to budget and time constraints.

.

Northern Ireland (3 days)

  • Hollow Hill – Belmore Forest, Northern Ireland
  • Winterfell – Castle Ward, Northern Ireland
  • Castle Black and the Wall – Magheramorne, Northern Ireland
  • Winterfell – Carncastle, Northern Ireland
  • Vale of Arryn – Glenariff, Northern Ireland

Croatia (3 Days)

The ancient city of Dubrovnik lies in the beautiful coastline of South Croatia. It is a must visit place for a Game of Thrones’ fan. This city has some stunning buildings and Fortresses dating back to the 15th and 16thcentury.

  • King’s Landing – Dubrovnik, Croatia
  • Landscapes of the West – Krka National Park, Croatia
  • Meereen – Fortress of Klis, Croatia
  • Yunkai, Meereen- Baska Voda, Croatia

Spain(3 Days) – Plaza De Toros De Osuna is the place where one of the most expensive scenes in the history of television was shot.  This is THE place, where Tyrion and Daenerys met here for the first time in the fifth season.

  • Oldtown, Braavos – Girona, Spain
  • Dothraki Sea – Bardenas Reales Natural Park, Spain
  • Horn Hill – Santa Florentina Castle, Spain
  • Arena of Meereen – Plaza De Toros De Osuna, Spain

Morocco (2 Days) – Pentos – Aït-Ben-Haddou, Morocco – This ancient city is the place where some of the most popular movies in the history of Cinema were shot – The Mummy, Alexander, Gladiator, and Prince of Persia to name some of my favorites.  Travelling to Aït-Ben-Haddou will not only be for checking out Pentos from Game of Thrones but also various spots from my favorite movies.

I need help with few planning things – How should I travel from one country to the other? What is the best way of commuting within the city? Which popular cuisine that we should try? Please share some travel tips in the comments. Also, if you have any posts on Northern Ireland, Croatia, Spain and Morocco, do mention those in the comments.

  1. Okay first of all your blog name is my absolute favorite!!! How clever 🙂 And secondly, sooo jelly of your Euro trip coming up in May. I’m absolutely DYING to plan a trip out there, although I want to go and see all the places you listed my first stops would definitely have to be Rome, Paris, Venice, Italy. That is so exciting though, I feel excited for you after reading this post!

  3. Hi Priyanka, Hopbucket.com is the website where you can collect trip ideas, manage trips and share your itineraries with your facebook friends. It is not a commercialized website. It doesn’t provide any ticket bookings.

  4. I never been to those countries 😦 but just like any other European countries, you can easily travel from one country to another with budget airlines, trains or buses. The countries you want to visit are quite far from each other except for Morocco and Spain. So that leaves you with fewer options. Hmm 3 days in each country. Isn’t that too short?

  5. I love GOT and this is such a great itinerary! Even if you aren’t a far these places look amazing. I’m pinning it for later as I really want to go to some of these places.

  6. I have been to all those countries. I just wrote about northern Ireland, since you asked. http://www.miles-away.blog under “destinations” ( Belfast).
You can take a “game of thrones” tour either from Dublin or Belfast, they differ in destinations but are both cool.

You will LOVE Northern Ireland and also Croatia. So very different but both gorgeous!

  7. This sounds like an epic trip 😀 Some of the places are quite far apart so you will lose time on travel. Spain and Morocco are absolutely feasible and we’ve done those two places in one trip ourselves. There are easily accessible ferries that ply between the two countries so you will have no trouble there. If your budget and time permits, by all means give all those places a shot. After all, for diehard GOT fans this would be the trip of a lifetime 🙂

  8. I’m actually on a bus from Split – Zagreb right now having just done my own little GoT related exploration of Split/Dubrovnik! Your travel itinerary for this year looks so similar to mine! Can’t comment on the rest of the countries you’ve listed, but public transport links (bus/train) are super good over here and SO cheap! It’s easy to get between all the places you mentioned by bus. There are GoT tours on offer in Dubrovnik & Split during peak season ( I missed out!) but I don’t think the one in Dubrovnik is worth paying for – you can do it all on your own a lot cheaper!
I’m working on a few posts at the moment for Dubrovnik, Split, Klis and Trsteno and would be happy to share them with you when they’re done!

  9. Wow, what an itinerary and of course most of those places are well served by Ryanair. Northern Ireland is great but you should consider the South of Ireland too. It has a fantastic coastline. I may have a little bias though. Have a look at: wildatlanticway.com to see what I mean….

  10. Awesome trip! I was in Croatia back in 2015. Kings Landing has been taken over by tourists but the other locations were much more chill. Either way, such a beautiful country!
